State Parks Offer Free Learn To Swim Lessons

The State Parks Department is expanding its offering of free, learn-to-swim programs at state parks across the state this summer, hoping to reach nearly 3,000 children.

Volunteers Show Minnewaska Some Love

Volunteers came from as far as Albany and Ithaca to give Minnewaska State Park Preserve some love during I Love My Park Day on Saturday.
With the Sam’s Point Preserve Area of the park still closed two weeks after a wildfire scorched the area, the 25 volunteers who arrived Saturday decked out in rain gear were feeling especially protective of the park where they have gone hiking, biking and rock climbing. Volunteers split up into three different projects, and spent the day clearing overgrown trails and building a new one.READ MORE

Park Alert: Access Closures

A 2,000 acre wildfire had forced the closure of Minnewaska State Park Preserve since Sunday, April 24, 2016. Minnewaska will re-open to the public on Saturday, April 30 with the following restrictions:
The entire Sam's Point Area will remain CLOSED until further notice.
Trails connecting the Lake MInnewaska area to the Sam's Point area will remain CLOSED until further notice. Those closed trails are: Lower Mine Hole Trail, Mine Hole Road/Long Path, Scenic Trail, Smiley Carriage Road, Stony Kill Carriage Road and South Gully Trail.
These restrictions are in place for your safety and the protection of sensitive resources; PLEASE STAY OUT OF CLOSED AREAS.
Firefighters Battle 800 Acre Blaze at Minnewaska State Park

The battle to control and extinguish the wildfire at Sam's Point Preserve is entering its fourth day. More firefighters from outside Ulster County are joining the fight on Tuesday.
Hundreds of firefighters and other emergency responders are involved. The fire has consumed more than 800 acres. There is some rain in Tuesday's forecast, but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to help stop the fire.READ MORE

Denise Doring VanBuren, (History Advocate/Author), is this year’s recipient of the Martha Washington Woman of History Award. This award is given by Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site each year to a woman who has made a contribution to the history of the Hudson Valley through education, promotion, or preservation. The honor was inspired by Martha Washington, an outstanding woman in history who resided in the Hudson Valley with her husband, General George Washington, during the last days of the Revolutionary War.READ MORE
