Park Information
In 1964, the Commission purchased more than 50 parcels - a total of 800 acres - in the Town of Wallkill, in Orange County. These purchases marked the beginning of Highland Lakes State Park, a pristine preserve near the busy corner created by Interstate 84 and State Route 17. Over the following years, Highland Lakes has nearly quadrupled in size, creating a buffer for the Shawangunk ridge.

Open: Dawn to Dusk. There are no toilets and parking is limited. Horses are permitted with permit only.
Things To Do & See
Highland Lakes, whose 3,115 acres make it the largest of PIPC's undeveloped parks, is popular for fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and model airplane flying.

There are no official blazed trails in Highlands Lakes State Park. However, there is an expansive network of unmarked woods roads and trails. No trail map exists and hikers should be very cautious when traveling on unmarked trails as it is easy to get lost. Roads and unmarked trails can be muddy and are not maintained.
A permit is required to ride a horse in Highlands Lakes State Park. Please contact the Bear Mountain office for details.
Just near the main parking area, there are a number of old fields that model airplane enthusiasts use for flying. On nice days, there may be dozens of planes in the air at Highlands Lakes.
